Kork, zwei Lederriemen mit Schnalle, das Fußbett und alles zusammen made in Germany. Das ist Birkenstock. Einst ein Symbol für linksalternative Weltverbesser ist Birkenstock mehr denn je in der Mitte der Gesellschaft und auch bei den Cool Kids in den Frontrows angekommen. Gerade im Sommer sieht man Birkenstocks überall. Lässig zum Kleid oder schick zur Stoffhose mit Hemd. Birkenstock ist eine Ikone des deutschen Stils geworden und hat sich mittlerweile auch international durchgesetzt.
Alles begann mit der Entwicklung eines Fußbetts, das bis heute umstritten ist. Umstritten, weil Birkenstock und Fans behaupten, es sei besonders gut und gesund für die Füße. Orthopäden sehen bis heute keinen Nachweis dafür, dass Birkenstocks gesünder für die Füße sind, als irgendein anderer Schuh. Aber bequem sind sie, das kann niemand abstreiten.

Auch Skandale hat das Unternehmen gesammelt. Zwar werden alle offenen Schuhe schon immer in Deutschland (geschlossene Modelle in Portugal) gefertigt, d.h. jedoch nicht, dass alle Mitarbeiterinnen gut behandelt wurden. Ein dickköpfiger Familienpatriarch mobbte lange Zeit die Mitglieder des ersten Betriebsrates, stürmte Sitzungen und schüchterte Mitarbeiter bis zur Kündigung ein. Auch als der Vater aus dem Unternehmen ausschied, lief nicht alles besser. Die Söhne waren zerstritten und das Unternehmen unübersichtlich. Seit der aktuelle Chef Oliver Reichert dazu gekommen ist, hat sich vieles davon jedoch massiv gebessert. Es gibt Betriebsräte, die Unternehmensstruktur wurde vereinheitlicht und klarere Strukturen geschaffen. Auch in der Lieferkette setzt Birkenstock auf faire Arbeitsbedingungen und setzt sich aktiv gegen Kinderarbeit ein. Außerdem listet das Unternehmen seit 2018 seine Produkte nicht mehr bei Amazon, da man weder Arbeitsbedingungen noch die vieles Fakes akzeptieren will, die dort in Umlauf kommen.

Aus ökologischer Sicht ist Birkenstock sicherlich kein Pionier, aber der Mut seit jeher in Deutschland zu produzieren und hier weiter Arbeitsplätze aufzubauen und mittlerweile zu guten Bedingungen zu produzieren hat uns dazu bewogen, Birkenstock mit in diese Liste aufzunehmen. Wie für alle Brands gilt hier ganz besonders, wenn uns andere Fälle bekannt werden, werden wir die Brand auch wieder löschen.

Once a symbol for left-wing alternative do-gooders, Birkenstocks arrived more than ever in the middle of society and also among the cool kids in the front rows. Especially in summer you see Birkenstocks everywhere. Casual with a dress or chic with cloth trousers and a shirt. Birkenstocks have become an icon of German style and have now also established themselves internationally.

It all began with the development of a footbed that is still controversial today. Controversial because Birkenstock and fans claim it is particularly good and healthy for the feet. Orthopaedists still see no proof that Birkenstocks are healthier for the feet than any other shoe. But they are comfortable, no one can deny that.

The company has also collected scandals. Although all open-toed shoes have always been made in Germany (closed-toed models are made in Portugal), this does not mean that all female employees have been treated well. For a long time, a stubborn family patriarch mobbed the members of the first work council, stormed meetings and intimidated employees to the point of dismissal. Even when the father left the company, things did not improve. The sons were estranged and the company was confusing. Since the current boss Oliver Reichert joined, however, much of this has improved massively. There are work councils, the structure of the company has been unified and clearer structures have been created. Birkenstock is also committed to fair working conditions in the supply chain and actively opposes child labour. In addition, the company has not listed its products on Amazon since 2018, as it does not want to accept either working conditions or the many fakes that circulate there.

From an ecological point of view, Birkenstock is certainly not a pioneer, but the courage to produce in Germany and to continue to build up jobs here and to produce under good conditions in the meantime has persuaded us to include Birkenstock in this list. If we become aware of other cases, we will put out the fire again - likewise with any other brand.
